Before this match my statistical analysis predicted a 2-1 win for Wormley with an outside chance for Baldock because of the home advantage.
I thought that was out of the window when I head that our Goalkeeper had been injured in pre-match gardening. Definitely no chance of a win now - but miracles do happen!
Jerrel Watkins was the chosen outfielder to play in goal, I don’t know if he has ever been in goal before but this normally doesn’t go very well.
The weather was set fair for a good match and Baldock started off brightly with Blair threatening to cause problems down the right hand side.
In only 5 mins Kassaye picked up the ball just outside the box, made some progress and powered a left foot shot low, from 16 yards, into the net for the opener.
1-0 to Baldock.
Just after the restart Blair was on the move in a mazy run into the box and was brought down for what I thought was a definite penalty but the Ref thought otherwise - disallowed.
In 10 mins Baldock had a Free Kick out on the left. The resulting delivery found Powell at the back post but he headed just past.
A few minutes later the ball was crossed from the right where Higgs met the cross with a header but the Wormley Keeper pulled off a point blank save.
In 17 mins a Baldock corner was headed just past by Powell again - at least he is on the end of them!
A minute later Blair did some good work on the right to make space, cut inside and his shot had a slight deflection into the net for the second.
2-0 to Baldock.
The rest of the half continued in the same manner with almost constant pressure from Baldock but there were no more goals in this half. Almost unbelievably, and no doubt to the great relief of Watkins in goal, there were no attempts on goal from Wormley at all.
The Baldock team had been working hard and were closing down really quickly, first to every ball. The crowd, most of them at least, were well pleased with the result so far but it could easily have been 6 or 7 nil to Baldock - there were that many chances.
The second half started similar to the first with Blair off on a run down the right, almost straight from the kick off, into the box where he shot across the Keeper. The Wormley Keeper spilled it into the path of Akinbobola who knocked it high into the net for the third.
3-0 to Baldock.
Just after that Wormley had their first attempt on goal, a shot from distance, a bit tame, but it did allow Watkins the opportunity for a somewhat ‘dramatic’ save - he was definitely allowed that!
In 50 mins Blair was off again on another run into the box. His shot beat the Keeper but came off the post. Blair picked put the rebound and shot low into the net from a difficult angle. A great goal.
4-0 to Baldock.
Baldock had the ball in the net again one minute later but it was disallowed for offside.
It was well into the second have before Wormley had their much expected period of some control. The Baldock midfield seem to have dropped a bit, maybe tired, and allowed Wormley some time on the ball. Any time that Wormley did threaten they found Watkins, in goal, well up for it - he certainly did handle the job of Keeper confidently.
The Wormley period did not last too long and Baldock were soon at it again.
Higgs, on the far left, was doing some good work on the wing, always there for the out ball, and up for having a run at the defence.
There were still quite a few more chances in the second half but on 88 mins Akinbobolo caught the Wormley defence napping and was through on the Keeper. His low pass beat the Keeper but hit the post and went wide.
It wasn’t over yet and ‘Man of the Match’, Blair, had yet another great run down the right and finished an individual goal with a fine shot past the keeper in 95 mins.
5-0 to Baldock.
A fine team performance interspersed with touches of individuality and great goals. Just what we were looking for but were certainly not expecting. I can’t see Watkins holding his place in goal but he deserves a special mention, along with the defence who protected him, in keeping a clean sheet.
I will take a 5-0 win any day, any way.
