Both sides came into this Quarter-Final tie in good form and despite Town still missing a host of regulars, manager Gregson was confident that there was enough quality in his squad to progress to the last four. However, it was Kristian Munt's men who prevailed with a deserved 3-1 victory.
Gregson made three changes to the side that won comprehensively at Arlesey on Saturday. Charlie Briggs made his first start since arriving from Codicote in place of assistant manager Dean Gilbert, who dropped to the bench. With both Lee Harman and Freddie Morris unavailable, Luke Holt and Callum Riley came in at left back and left midfield respectively.
It was a fairly even opening to the game with the home side having the benefit of a strong breeze blowing behind them. Baldock had an effort hooked off the line following a good inswinging free-kick from Alex Coppin. Then at the other end, a Wodson forward broke in behind, but could only shoot into the side netting.
However, the home side made the breakthrough in the 11th minute. A long clearance had Briggs trying to hold off the attentions of a home forward as he ran back towards his own goal, but confusion between him and Jack Farmer allowed the Wodson forward to get in between them and steer the ball home.
It got worse for Baldock midway through the first half when Wodson Park doubled their advantage. A free-kick from the Baldock right was headed home well into the roof of the net. Jack Farmer pulled off a couple of good saves at the end of the first half to keep Town in with a shout, but they had been a distant second best from the moment they went behind.
Wodson Park missed a great chance to make it three early in the second half when one of their players ghosted into the box unmarked, but he could only shin a pinpoint cross wide of the target. Moments later, Josh Furness came alive and beat a home full back before sending over a great cross, but Callum Riley could only blaze a volley over.
The tie was all but settled on 51 minutes when Wodson made it 3-0. A teasing free-kick from the Baldock right was swung in between defence and keeper and it was crying out to be turned home and a player in Navy Blue didn't disappoint with a low driven finish into the corner.
Baldock responded quickly and had themselves a lifeline with a Rob Beckwith header reducing the arrears to 3-1. The visitors had arguably their best spell for the next ten minutes or so with Riley and Anthony James going close. The home side were able to absorb that little spell of pressure though and defended resolutely as Baldock failed to turn their possession into goals.
Town had a couple of strong appeals for a penalty turned down, which could've made the closing stages a little more nervy for the hosts, but they were good value for their victory on the night and it is they who march on to the Semi-Final.
Gregson was pretty clear about what he thought of his own side's performance saying "the lads just didn't turn up". Asked whether he thought the players he had out affected the result, he said "The lads might use that, but it is a cop out! I thought we had enough to win, but my regulars were terrible. We have no excuses, we were just not good enough on the night".
His side are back on league duty on Saturday afternoon when Ampthill Town are the visitors to Roker Park. That match is a 3pm kick off, so please do come along and support as we aim to close the gap on Harpenden Town at the top.
