Whilst pleased to get another victory, manager Luke Gregson had more pressing concerns after losing Lewis Barker and Kim Forsythe in the first half to add to his mounting injury list.
Gregson recalled Luke Holt to his squad after he had been getting some regular game time at Shefford Town & Campton. Sam Perrin returned after missing out on Saturday, whilst there were also starts for Charlie Payne and Alex Coppin.
The opening 20 minutes was a pretty scrappy affair with both teams struggling on a desperately poor playing surface. Potton had probably shaded proceedings with former Red Lee Rogers showing some nice touches in the middle of the park.
The visitors took the lead midway through the half when a ball into the box was not dealt with and Cory Cooper seized his chance to steer the ball past Farmer.
Baldock showed glimpses, but didn't get a foothold in the game until 33 minutes in when they were awarded a penalty. A clumsy challenge in the box on Kim Forsythe gave Luke Gregson the opportunity to level. He stroked the ball home well and made it four goals in as many games.
A swift turn around was complete a couple of minutes later. A good run from Barker ended with the crunching challenge that would see him have to depart the field soon after. The ball broke kindly for Charlie Payne and he checked back on to his right foot to cross for Forsythe to head home his 7th goal of the season.
That proved to be Forsythe's last action before limping off injured and he was soon followed by Barker with Hennessey and Anthony James coming on respectively.
Potton went close when a decent ball to the far post was headed goalwards, but Farmer made a smart stop to keep the Town lead intact. This proved the tonic for Town to extend their lead seconds later at the other end.
Following a back pass, an attempted clearance from the visiting keeper went straight to Payne and he laid the ball on a plate for James to drive home his 49th goal in 48 appearances since signing in September 2015.
After the break, the visitors started on the front foot and Town right back Sam Perrin looked fortunate to get away with only a yellow card after he hauled back a Potton forward running through on goal. His fortune proved short lived though as we was adjudged to have handled the resulting free kick in the defensive wall.
The visiting forward stepped up and guided the ball past Farmer despite his best efforts, guessing right.
The tie continued to ebb and flow, but Baldock will probably feel they should have put the game to bed with three excellent chances in the final 20 minutes.
First, Robertson timed a run to perfection in behind, but as the ball sat up, he couldn't get enough on it to lob the keeper. Soon after he missed an opportunity to head home from close range, instead electing to try bundling home with his body. He then turned provider, playing in James, but somehow Baldock’s leading scorer managed to guide his finish the wrong side of the post.
Farmer was forced into one notable save in the second period as Potton had their moments too, but it is Baldock who march on and they can look forward to a Semi Final tie at either Kempston Rovers or Biggleswade United in the New Year.
