Manager Luke Gregson made three changes to the side which won 3-0 at Kensington Borough on Saturday. He missed out completely after limping off at the end of the first half, whilst Charlie Payne was only fit enough for the bench. Kim Forsythe, Jack Gregson and Luke Hennessey came into the starting XI with Owen Robertson the other man to miss out.
Much of the first period was a low key affair not really fitting of a top of the table clash, although there were a few challenges flying around. Town felt they should've had a penalty after they had a man brought down in the area, but the referee Tom Cartwright waved away the Baldock protests.
With neither side yet to really impose their superiority on proceedings, the match came to life on the half hour. A neat passage of play saw the ball break for Jack Gregson, but his goal bound shot was blocked by team mate Lewis Barker.
Seconds later Alex Coppin forced a good save out of the Biggleswade keeper with an inswinging drive from the outside of his left foot. Matches between top teams can often hinge on fine margins and that proved to be the case here.
With Baldock not getting the rub of the green at one end, Biggleswade seized their opportunity at the other. George Riley managed to find some space in the middle of the park and carried the ball forward. With no challenge forthcoming, he hit a speculative strike from 25 yards. The shot bent away from Jack Farmer and nestled in the bottom left hand corner.
It was the first goal Baldock had conceded in the league this season and that fine run coming to an end seemed to rattle the home side. Before they could regain their focus, the visitors had doubled their advantage. Farmer did well to deny Ebey Marango as he threatened to round off a good move, but he could do nothing about the resulting corner. The ball to the far post was met by Ryan Vale and his looping header went over Farmer and into the net.
Kim Forsythe had a half chance as the first period drew to a close, but he could only guide his header wide of the target with the keeper in no mans land from a deep free kick.
There had been little to choose between the sides in the opening 45 minutes, but this young Biggleswade side were clinical when the chances came for them.
Luke Gregson rolled the dice early in the second half by throwing on top scorer Anthony James and Shaun Turner for Harry Holland and Alex Coppin. James almost had an immediate impact when the ball broke for him in the box after a fine strike from Jack Gregson, but he could only hit the outside of the post.
Luke must've wished he was out on the pitch, but he was doing his best to galvanise his troops from the bench. The Reds were looking a bit leggy, but you just felt if they could get a goal, the match would be right back in the balance.
That proved to be the case when they brought on Owen Robertson for Hennessey. The substitute the other way around on Saturday had a positive effect and this time it was Robertson's turn to bring the impact required.
He was into the thick of the action straight away and seemed to make the right decisions every time he got on the ball. Midway through the second half Town halved the deficit and it was that man Robertson who supplied a pin point cross for Forsythe to crash home a great finish on the volley into the top corner.
All of a sudden Baldock looked a different animal and Anthony James then quickly found himself through, but Baldock's normal Mr Reliable in front of goal couldn't quite make the right contact on the ball as it sat up. His attempted lob came down just wide of the target.
The fine margins showed again when after a salvo of Baldock pressure, Biggleswade scored what looked to be a killer third goal 15 minutes from time.
Biggleswade kept the ball well, but Baldock's failure to stop the cross allowed Tom Cookman to head home at the far post. The visiting players and bench were in raptures, but in his joy, Cookman was given a second yellow for an assault on the corner flag!
With Biggleswade down to 10 men, there was still a glimmer of hope for the Reds and they seized their chance within four minutes when Owen Robertson guided home a superb header after a great switch of play by Shaun Turner.
Baldock were now laying seige to the visiting goal and they thought they'd equalised when another Robertson ball into the box was bundled home. Unfortunately the assistant's flag came to the Biggleswade rescue.
The home side kept probing and asking questions, but the young visitors back line held firm. As Town chased the game and committed bodies forward, they were always susceptible to the counter attack and the visitors put the result beyond doubt in the dying seconds with a fine solo goal from Ebey Marango.
He had a couple of fortuitous runs of the ball as he made his way towards the penalty area, but there was nothing fortunate about the finish, a curling effort on the slide into the roof of the net to settle a pulsating second half.
Their fine unbeaten sequence of 13 games comes to an end, but getting through a month of big games without a defeat was always going to be a big ask. For Biggleswade though, they now lead the way after Risborough could only draw with Harefield United.
Luke Gregson's side now turn their attentions back to the FA Vase when they make the short trip to Biggleswade United. The tie is a 3pm kick off at Second Meadow, SG18 0AA. Please do come along and show your support if your can.

On a more serious note, Baldock Town coach Doug McClure was taken ill following Tuesday night's match. An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital where he spent the night.
Speaking to Luke earlier, Doug was due to be discharged on Wednesday afternoon so fingers crossed he gets well soon. On behalf of the club we send our best wishes to Doug and his family for a speedy recovery.
