With Steve Morgan standing in for manager Scott Grant again, he took his troops to a side who had won seven of their opening eight Premier Division matches. The Reds task was all the more daunting with regulars Nicky Stilwell, Adam Pitcairn, Jack Harman and Ian Morrison all either unavailable or injured. This meant Reserve keeper Adam Burnett and Sam Crow were promoted to the 1st Team ranks. Adam Furness was called back from Uni to play, whilst Morgan himself and coach Jim Starling were also named on the bench.
Word in the early stages was to keep two tight banks of four and hit the hosts on the break. However, Baldock got off to a dream start opening the scoring inside four minutes. Michael Payne headed home a well-executed corner from Gary Christie for his third goal of the season.
Despite their early breakthrough, Baldock stuck to their game plan and frustrated Rangers, who were unable to force a way through in the remainder of the half.
The Reds continued to keep the home side at bay until a good move yielded a crucial second goal. Gary Christie rounded off a good passage of play to net his second goal in three games. With 15 minutes to go, Town could've been well out of sight when they were awarded a penalty. However, Anthony Bowskill's indifferent form from the spot continued as he spurned the opportunity.
The Town skipper was nearly made to rue his miss when Rangers halved the deficit late on, but Baldock held on to claim a fine victory and move up to third in the table now just four points behind leaders Metropolitan Police Bushey.
