On Saturday the Red Army will make the journey to Suffolk, where we will meet Stowmarket Town in the 2nd Round of the Buildbase FA Vase.
The town of Stowmarket is located on the A14 between Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, and lies on the River Gipping. It takes it’s name from the old English word stōw meaning “principal place” and was granted a market charter in 1347 by Edward III.
Anyway, enough of the history lesson and back to the matter in hand, namely Saturday’s match. The Old Gold and Blacks play in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division (probably better known as the Eastern Counties Football League) which is an equivalent level to our own Spartan South Midlands League.
Stowmarket Town currently sit in a very impressive 4th place in the table and are the top scoring side in their League so far this season having hit the net on 30 occasions. They have a League record of P13 W6 D3 L4 Pts21.
So far this season, at their Greens Meadow home, they have been beaten 3 times in 10 matches. These were by Bostik League Basildon United (0-2) in the FA Cup, and in League matches against Walsham-le-Willows (2-3) and last Saturday against Godmanchester Rovers (1-2). In the first round of the FA Vase they saw off Harpenden Town from our League by 5-0, so we should not be under any illusions as to the difficulty of this tie.
Stowmarket Town - last 5 results
27 Oct Godmanchester Rovers (H) League Lost 1-2
23 Oct Haverhill Rovers (H) League Cup 2R Won 6-1
20 Oct Kirkley & Pakefield (A) League Drew 1-1
13 Oct Harpenden Town (H) FA Vase Won 5-0
09 Oct Mildenhall Town (A) Suffolk Premier Cup W 4-1
It is also noticeable that the club are very well supported, with gates in excess of 300 in three of their ten home matches this season and very often close to that figure (we are not jealous, well not much anyway!).
As alluded to earlier, Stowmarket play in old gold and black, so presumably we will be back wearing the all red kit.
Rather than writing out the direction details here as normal, I would suggest you click HERE to visit the club information page on the excellent Stowmarket Town website. Here you will find directions to the ground (road and rail), parking information, nearby cashpoints and suggested places to eat.
If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes there will be 30 minutes of extra time. If the scores remain level, then there will be a replay at the New Lamb Meadow on Wednesday 7th November 2018 (tbc).
Baldock Town are running a coach to the game at a cost of £15 per person. Places are limited and it’s on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested, then please email Pinky at email@example.com
