Reds Battle to Secure Victory!

In front of a healthy 147 attendance, Baldock Town took their winning run to 5 matches on the bounce with a battling performance against Leighton Town at the New Lamb Meadow..

With Sam James coming in to replace Charlie Joy and Russell Bull returning to the front line while Harry Holland took a break on the bench, the early exchanges took place in the visitors half of the field and it wasn’t long before Baldock were ahead.

On 7 minutes the busy Russell Bull received a pass from strike partner Kim Forsythe and, after initially losing the ball, he won it back, turned and slotted the ball coolly past Charlie Jones in the Leighton goal to give the Reds an early advantage.

The half continued with Baldock in the ascendancy. On 16 minutes, Biggleswade Town loanee Robbie Buchanan tried an extravagant overhead kick which, had it have been on target, would have won any goal of the season competition.

As the game went on however, Leighton Town seemed to gain in confidence and it was really no surprise when they equalised in the 39th minute. From a corner on the right, David Murphy found space and powered a header past Adam Harpur in the Baldock goal to send the sides into the break at 1 apiece.

Leighton should have taken the lead early in the 2nd half when tricky winger Jay Caines beat his marker and crossed the ball for tall striker Kyle Faulkner to head wide.

But shortly after Baldock Town regained their lead when Kieran Barnes latched on to a through ball from Forsythe and rounded the helpless keeper to tap the ball into an empty net.

The game continued with little in the way of goalmouth action and indeed became quite scrappy and cynical, not being helped by an over-fussy official who pretty much lost control of the match. In the end, 5 players on each side were shown yellow cards, with Leighton’s Tom Silford receiving his marching orders after seeing yellow for a 2nd time, 8 minutes into stoppage time.

Baldock’s victory takes them into a top half 10th place in the table, and with games in hand on all around them, into an ideal position to push on further in the New Year.

Next Saturday the Reds have a week off and their next match is an away fixture at London Tigers on Saturday 12th January. The next home fixture is a week later when Colney Heath will be the visitors to the New Lamb Meadow.
